Overview
Cervical Laminoplasty is a surgical technique that removes pressure from the spinal cord in the neck.
Pressure on the spinal cord can be due to various conditions like:
- Degenerative changes
- Arthritis
- Bone spurs
- Disc Herniations
- Tumors
- Fractures
- OPLL i.e. Ossification of Posterior Longitudinal Ligament
Increased pressure on the spinal column is often termed as Spinal Stenosis that can occur at multiple levels of the cervical spine at the same time. Excessive or severe pressure on the spinal column may lead to Myelopathy.
Cervical Laminoplasty is an excellent option to reverse the symptoms by removing the pressure and allow the spinal cord to heal. Laminoplasty is a procedure in which portions of the lamina i.e. the bony “roof” of the spinal canal are removed.
The removal of lamina enlarges the spinal canal and reduces the Spinal Stenosis (narrowing). With Cervical Laminoplasty, the back of the vertebra in the neck region is made to swing open like a door and hence this technique is often referred to as an "Open Door Laminoplasty."
When Cervical Laminoplasty Surgery is needed?
Cervical laminoplasty becomes imperative when a patient continuously experience spinal cord compression and Myelopathy. Patients with Myelopathy can have various symptoms including numbness, pain and/or weakness in the arms and hands.
Due to the progression of Myelopathy, such patients find difficulty in using their hands for day-to-day activities and often face difficulty in walking due to balance problems besides having impaired bowel or bladder control.
Cervical Laminoplasty Surgery is performed to decompress the spinal cord in conditions like:
- Ossification of the Posterior Longitudinal Ligament i.e. OPLL - a condition in which Posterior Longitudinal Ligament in the spinal canal becomes thickened and inflexible. Posterior Longitudinal Ligament is responsible for stabilizing the bones of the spinal column
- Cervical Spondylotic Myelopathy - occurs due to degenerative changes that cause Myelopathy in the cervical spine
- Cervical Stenosis - a narrowing of the spinal canal in the cervical spine
Cervical Laminoplasty is also performed to provide the surgeon access of spinal cord for the surgical treatment of:
• Tumors in spine
• Vascular malformations, tangles of abnormal blood vessels
• Syringomyelia, fluid-filled cysts within the spinal cord
The success rate of cervical spine surgery is very high
The main aim of Cervical Laminoplasty Surgery is not only to alleviate pain from Cervical Spinal Stenosis but also to prevent the worsening of neurologic functions.
However, Cervical Spine Surgery is considered to be highly successful in improving neurological functions and relieving pain.
Though the success rates of Cervical Spine Surgery are very high yet the fact remains that the post-operative outcome of Cervical Spine Surgery largely depends upon pre-operative baseline functional level.
How long does it take to recover from Laminoplasty surgery?
Following a Cervical Laminoplasty, most patients you experience an immediate improvement of some or all of the symptoms. However, other symptoms may show more improvement gradually. Most patients stay in the hospital for one day although healing varies from individual to individual.
Patients can stand up and walk in the hospital by the end of the day after surgery and may return to work in a few weeks, depending upon the progress and healing response of the body. Most patients do not require a Cervical Collar to support their neck.
