Overview:
When the spinal cord of the person has sideways curves, that situation is referred to as Scoliosis. The curve presents as a “S” shaped curve or a “C “shaped curve. In some cases, the curve remains stable while in some other cases it may increase with age.
Symptoms and Complications:
Though predominantly, it is termed as a painless condition, pain may be present in back, shoulders and neck may be present at times. Constipation, respiratory and cardiac problems appear in patients with severe conditions. What starts as a breathing issue lays the foundation of various complications like Thoracic Insufficiency Syndrome (TIS). In this syndrome, the thorax of the patient does not have the capacity to support the growing lungs thereby interfering with the patient’s normal breathing making it abnormal and difficult. This may shorten a person’s life expectancy.
Surgical Treatment:
When the bend is about 40 to 50 degrees or higher, doctors usually recommend “Growth Rod Surgery.”
What is Growth Rod Surgery?
Ideal for children between the age of 3 to 8 years where the skeletal maturity is not achieved and hence the curves can be corrected to allow a normal growth in the height of the child. This surgery consists of attaching rods to the patient’s spine and at times to the ribs above and below the spinal curve. There are screws at each end of the rod.
How is the Growth Rod Surgery Performed?
The rods are implanted trough tiny incisions and are attached to the ribs with the help of screws. These attachments are made above and below the curves of the spine. Since this is the growing age of the child, this procedure which is one of the longest and most complicated procedures needs to be repeated again after every 6 months for extending the rods as required. When these extensions are repeated many times, there is a period of wait and watch allowing the spine to grow fully and the child becomes an adult. When the spine is fully grown, the supporting apparatus of the rods and screws are removed and there is spinal fusion surgery performed.
I don’t want my child to undergo repeated surgeries……
The recent technological advancements have changed the way the surgery is performed. The Magnetically Controlled Growth Rod Surgery. It is based on the concept that non- invasive methods must be adopted for lengthening of the rods and preventing unnecessarily opening the same implant site repeatedly thereby reducing possible infections, anesthesia use and hospitalization periods.
Why should I consider India for Growth Rod Surgery?
India is steadily being accepted as a preferred destination for undergoing the “Magnetically Controlled Growth Rod Surgery” due to the advanced modern technology along with the skilled surgeons are providing the best treatment at the best hospitals.
India offers Low Cost Growth Rod Surgery:
The cost of Growth Rod Surgery in India is nearly half that of the same surgery in the developed countries like the UK, USA, etc. The best and most skilled surgeons are providing these services at the best hospitals in India which are internationally accredited. These services are provided without waiting time and with the best possible technology.
Advantages of Growth Rod Surgery in India:
- Though all the surgeries come with some of the other risks, there no impact of Growth Rod Surgery on the life span of the patient.
- The patient’s physical appearance, balancing ability and height improves after surgery.
- The pain disappears after one month of the surgery.
- There is a greater range of activities that the patient can undertake following surgery especially recreational and athletic activities apart from daily life activities.
- No further surgery is needed except in cases of complications.
- Scoliosis surgery corrects nearly 60% of the curves.
Cost of Growth Rod procedure in India:
The Magnetically Controlled Growth Rod Surgery procedure is provided at a nearly half cost that its cost in the developed countries. This process includes an implantable titanium rod, a remote controller and some extensions. For correcting scoliosis, while allowing the child to grow; the growth guided devices use designed instrumentation. On each side of the spine, two rods are implanted. These rods are attached to screws and wires called anchor points. These rods are attached to growth guided devices. These prevent the repeated surgical operations that were required mandatorily initially. These surgeries which were initially costly, risky and complicated are now affordable, shorter, easier and efficient.
